Report on the 5th EU studies school
"EU Educational and Environmental Policy"

The fifth School on EU studies took place on 3 - 7 May 2006 in Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU). The lecturers of the School were Dr. Jean-Luc de Meulemeester (Universite Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium) and Dr. Stefan Fritsch (University of Salzburg, Austria) - experts in European Educational and Environmental Policy, and the coordinator of the project Pr. Anselm Skuhra (University of Salzburg, Austria). On May 3, the first day of the School, the vice-rector for International Relations of NSTU Professor Evgeni B. Tsoy, Pr. Anselm Skuhra and Dr. Larisa V. Deriglazova greeted the participants. In the second part of the day all the trainees and lecturers had an excursion around Novosibirsk and to Akademgorodok, got acquainted with the history of the city and its most famous sights.
The second day began with the lecture on "EU Educational Policy" by Dr. Jean-Luc de Meulemeester. On May 3, the first day of the School, the vice-rector for International Relations of NSTU Professor Evgeni B. Tsoy, Pr. Anselm Skuhra and Dr. Larisa V. Deriglazova greeted the participants. In the second part of the day all the trainees and lecturers had an excursion around Novosibirsk and to Akademgorodok, got acquainted with the history of the city and its most famous sights.
The aim of his session was to familiarize trainees with the historical development of educational systems in Europe, to show the current changes in educational processes and analyze influence on them, produced by the last EU enlargement. During the session he touched upon Bologna Process and its importance for Europeans.
Dr. Stefan Fritsch held his lecture on "EU Environmental Policy" in the second half of the day. He stressed the main problems and controversies of European Environmental Policy, pointed out its aims and activities, analyzed contemporary environmental situation in European countries, and underlined the current tendencies of its further development. For a final roundup also an overview on Integration Theories was given.
Friday morning and afternoon were devoted to Course Evaluation and Quality Control Issues (Dr. Larisa Deriglazova) and Presentations of Research Papers prepared by the project's trainees. Experts and coordinators evaluated works, made remarks and suggested directions for further improvement. As part of Friday evening cultural program, trainees and lecturers enjoyed a ballet performance "The Fairy's Kiss" by Igor Stravinsky at Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre.
On Saturday morning Presentations were continuing. Later, a summary of the five Summer Schools on EU Studies was given by Pr. Skuhra, who evaluated the progress of trainees in mastering EU problematique and pointed out their achievements. It is a good mark for trainees as well as for experts, who did their best during the School. In the evening trainees and lecturers had a chance to watch a performance in Opera and Ballet Theatre - opera by Giuseppe Verdi "La Traviata".
The work of the School was really versatile. Except sessions and presentations, there were other activities based on trainees' work preceded the School such as writing abstracts on articles presented by the lecturers and research papers that help to formulate their viewpoints on the problem. The schedule of the School was created in the way to give the trainees and lecturers an opportunity to harmonize scientific work, leisure time and informal communication.
